If you were to choose to study abroad, where should you go? Choosing the right institution for study is very important. There will undoubtedly be a great number of factors to take into consideration. For example, you may have to think about financial factors of furthering your education. Will the subject you aim to study be of any value when you return home?
At LST, we offer an academic, social and cultural experience of the finest quality. You can study for internationally recognised and respected qualifications to help you achieve your personal and career objectives. You can learn and live in London - one of the most exciting cities in the world. You can choose courses from many academic subjects that will give you the skills and knowledge you need to succeed. With the qualification and knowledge you gather at LST, you can prepare for further studies in UK universities.
Travel Plans
Unless you have already made your own arrangements for accommodation you should ideally plan your travel to arrive in London one to two weeks before the start of your course. However, if you have not arranged accommodation in advance, we can make a provisional booking on your behalf before you leave home, provided we receive your request in writing two weeks in advance of your proposed arrival in the UK. A non-refundable deposit of £300.00 must accompany your request.
LST will try to assist international students to find a suitable accommodation within easy reach of the School. We are often approached by families in our locality who have rooms to let, especially to students.
Airport Pickup
LST offers an airport pick up service for all newly enrolled International students arriving in UK for the first time. A payment of £70 will be made to meet up the cost. Students will be collected from the Airport terminal and transported directly to their accommodation destination. Additional family members or friends of the enrolled student may also use the service free of charge if they travel together. Students can be collected 24 hours per day, 7 days a week from Heathrow or Gatwick airport but pick-ups must be pre-arranged.
Arrival in the UK
You need to carry with you all the necessary documents including Letter of Enrolment and Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) and evidence of financial support or sponsorship, as the Immigration Officer at the port of arrival may want to see these documents. You should also bring with you sufficient funds in pounds sterling to meet your expenses on arrival.
Please advise us of the date and time of your arrival, stating whether or not you have arranged accommodation. Please also inform us if you need transport from the airport to your final destination. If you have any further queries or need any other help, please contact us and we shall be happy to assist you.
Late Arrivals
International students are warned not to arrive after the start date of the course. However, in exceptional circumstances, students may join the course within two weeks of the start date.
Married Students and Families
Generally accommodation in this category is more difficult to find. The School will, of course, try to render help in locating suitable accommodation for married students and their offspring, but it is to be stressed that the situation is more difficult than for a single person and the ultimate responsibility lies with the student concerned.
Part Time Work
Many students may need to supplement their expenses while they study and LST authorities do their best to help them find jobs.
The majority of students who enter the UK for longer than six months usually receive restricted permission to work during their studies. If you have any of the following three forms of authorisation written on the ‘Leave to Remain’ (visa) stamp in your passport, you have this standard restriction on working. Undergraduate and postgraduate students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week in term-time and full-time in vacations.
Health Care
Under the National Health Service (NHS), students studying in the UK for more than six months must register with a General Practitioner (GP) in the area where they live. Students will receive NHS cards on registration and will be able to consult a GP free of charge. If a student is not registered, they may have problem seeing a doctor when medical treatment becomes necessary.
If your course of study is for less than six months, you will not be entitled to NHS treatment, except in emergencies. GPs may agree to treat you for free, but this will usually be limited to urgent treatment that cannot be delayed until you return home. You will have to pay for any other treatment as a private patient. It is therefore advisable that you should obtain medical insurance for the duration of your visit to the UK.
Unless you hold an exemption certificate you will have to pay for medical prescriptions, eye tests and dental treatment. You may be eligible for exemption. To apply for an exemption certificate please collect forms HC1 and HC11 from any of the Health Centres or obtain online.
If you are from an EU country with a reciprocal health agreement with the UK, you can receive free treatment regardless of the length of your course.
Accommodation
Given that the majority of our full time students come from outside of the UK and European Union, we recognise how important it is for the School to help students to find suitable accommodation. Our student welfare office is dedicated to this task.
Finding suitable accommodation while you study at LST is relatively easy. Both extensive and competitively priced accommodation can be arranged for the student on request. All accommodation will be provided in self catered houses, flats and maisonettes. There is a range of private housing and family accommodation in the North London area surrounding the campus. If you would prefer any of these accommodations, the School can help you find a suitable place by providing you with guidance notes and up to date listings of available properties.
Living Cost
The cost of living obviously depends on the lifestyle you choose to have. Typically, however, students need £7,200 to cover food, accommodation, travel, books, etc for a full year (52 weeks), to which should be added about £2,000 for each dependent. Please contact the School information desk at our opening hours if you need further information or help in this matter.
